Target Audience for Pendulum

After this thought shower I have concluded  that the demographic of there target audience is Males from the ages of 14-20, they are on a low wage charged by the hour. They come under the social groups 'Skaters' or 'Hipsters', there hobbies include skateboarding and BMX-ing. They often shop at shops 'Topman' often wearing makes such as 'Superdry' checked shirts, skinny jeans and some boat or canvas shoes. They live in western countries such as the UK and US. They also listen to other similar bands that are: the Prodigy and TC.

Pendulum History

'Formed during 2002 by three musicians from Western Australia with similar visions and musical backgrounds.' They all wanted to 'create a new sound that they felt was missing from dance music. The individual members behind Pendulum have been active in Perth’s live music scene for several years: producer / vocalist / keyboardist Rob Swire and producer / bassist Gareth McGrillen played together in the acclaimed Perth band Xygen, while Paul ‘El Hornet’ Harding had been a veteran of the Perth DJ scene.'
The members of the band are:
 Rob Swire (vocals/synth/producer)
Gareth McGrillen (bass guitar/DJ)
Peredur ap Gwynedd (guitar)
Paul 'El Hornet' Harding (DJ)
KJ Sawka (drums)
Verse (MC

'2005 saw Pendulum release their debut artist album on Breakbeat Kaos, the highly acclaimed ‘Hold Your Colour’ that went on to sell in excess of 300,000 copies and spawned their first Top 30 hit in the shape of the single ‘Slam / Out Here’. The band’s full live experience (which adds guitarist Peredur ap Gwynedd, drummer Kodish and MC Verse to the core trio) also became an exciting prospect with a defining headline performance at Glastonbury’s Dance Stage being a particular highlight. By now the biggest artist on the underground, Pendulum aimed to continue their rise by signing a new deal with Warner Bros. Records / Ear Storm.'
'Having spent a second summer as the defining band of the international festival circuit (including phenomenal receptions from crowds at Glastonbury, Download, Isle of Wight and T in the Park festivals), Pendulum released their third studio album 'Immersion' in May this year, which went straight to Number 1 in the Official UK album chart. Summer 2010 has seen Pendulum smash the international festival circuit once again, and with Australian and European tours and a huge UK Arena Tour on the horizon, the Pendulum juggernaut continues to roll on, devastating all in its path.'
In 2006, Pendulum's old label Breakbeat Kaos released an album containing a 2-year-old Pendulum DJ mix without their permission, resulting in group member Rob Swire denouncing the album on public internet forum Dogs on Acid. This issue has since been resolved; DJ Fresh is included on the list of acknowledgements in the Immersion booklet, and Pendulum is now working with Breakbeat Kaos again, on the vinyl release of the singles "Witchcraft" and "The Island".
Electronic musician Goldie has criticized Pendulum's single "Granite" for being what he calls a "sh*t single", and accused the band of not acknowledging the drum and bass scene from which they came. For the band's part, in an interview with The Times Swire cited "Goldie making concept albums about space and his mum" (in the words of The Times reporter) as one of the reasons why he was not initially keen on the genre; he claims to have been more into “breakbeat, straight up house and hardcore” before Gareth McGrillen, who is Pendulum's bassist and was Swire's bandmate in Xygen, introduced him to "more electronic" areas of the genre. This issue has since been resolved aswell, according to Gareth McGrillen in an interview on Theage.com'

Pendulum Star Image

This is all the things that associate with the band and there type of music. There main stereotypical audience is 'Hipsters' these are the people who are philistines of the mainstream, they are normally young teenage males. They also recently have been losing this audience as there is dispute over whether or not they have mainstream or not. They follow the conformity of most music stars cliché 'Sex, Drugs & Rock and Roll' which the Drum & Bass is most  scene at they moment; this is due to the young audience of the genre, they also have associations to all these things on the 'mood board'.

Zombie Research

Zombies are a large part of pop culture. We are using zombies within our music videos, the zombie models will be based on George A. Romearo' s zombie model from his films, however there will be a twist as in Georges films they die and then come back to life, we will be making the character sick, then a virus makes him turn into a zombie. After the infection zombies life revolves around eating flesh, or the brain. The rules of the zombies that we will be using:

  • Slow moving
  • Blood thirsty
  • Brain-dead
  • Stiff movement
  • Groans
  • Emotionless
  • blemishes on the skin
  • Gory
  • White eye's
These attributes make the audience detach themselves from zombies, and they then root for the hero as they are more relatable. This is due to the graph called the uncanny valley, this is a graph depicting the more the character has human features the more you emphasis with it/them, the dip is called the uncanny valley, and zombies resemble humans but in a way that makes the audience feel uncomfortable.

Music Video Analysis (Let You Go by Chase & Status)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpFfM_dili4

This video is based on the narrative of a man being a hypocrite, It's parodies the Reality TV presenter Jeremy Kyle. The narrative starts with the presents in the dressing room, the camera pans around to reveal a picture of a happy smiling family. He then walks out the dressing room being handed pieces of paper to make him look important, the camera reveals the audience and the cameras. There is lots of low angle shots of the presenter looking smug, this is so that it makes the audience feel inferior, also the smug expression on his face is so that the audience distance themselves from the character; being smug has bad connotations. The characters on the reality TV show are shown fighting, the camera then cuts to a shot of the presenter laughing and shouting 'You're a disgrace!' which makes the Presenter look sadistic; as it's a bad attribute this then makes the audience feel hatred towards the character. After the show is finished, the presenter then goes on to do drugs, hires a prostitute, commit adultery, drink and party in a montage of clips. Yet Again the Camera chest harness is used to show disorientation whilst the presenter is high and drunk He then goes on to drink and drive, Whilst he's doing this he then crashes his car. The screen then turns black and then uses repetition as it then starts again in the dressing room, to create the effect of a cycle of this is what he does everyday of his life.
